Sick Leave – Paid

Article G.20

Length: on advice of physician

SRB Entry: Sick (Daily Illness), Sick (Medical Appointment), Sick (5+ days)

The teacher is sick or disabled, under medical treatment or because of an accident. Medical documentation may be requested by Human Resources.

Emergency Leave for Family Illness - Paid

Article G. 26

SRB Entry:

Length: Up to 3 days per school year (may be extended at the daily cost of TTOC)

To be used by the teacher in the case of serious illness of a spouse, child, parent, brother or sister.

Family Responsibility Leave - Unpaid

Article G.3

Length: Up to 5 days per school year

To be used by the teacher to meet responsibilities related to care, health or education of a child in the employee’s care or the care or health of any other member of the employee’s immediate family.

Discretionary Leave – Paid (at the daily cost of a Teacher Teaching on Call)

Article G.27

Length: Up to 2 days per school year

Teachers are charged the daily TTOC cost regardless of the need for a replacement.

Unpaid Discretionary Leave – Unpaid

Article G.5

Length: Up to 3 days per school year

To be used at the teachers’ discretion.

Birth or Adoption Leave – Paid

Article G.23

Length: Up to 2 days

Coinciding with the birth of a child and in the case of adoption or legal guardianship. Cannot be used by employee using pregnancy leave.

Pregnancy Leave – School District “tops-up” salary once EI claim is approved

Article G.21.1

Length: Up to 17 weeks

To be granted in accordance with the Employment Standards Act. Typically starts at the expected date of birth, but can start up to 11 weeks before birth. School District would prefer at least one months’ notice.

Parental Leave - Unpaid

Article G.21.2

Length: Up to 35 weeks

To be granted in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.

Parenthood Leave - Unpaid

Article G.22

Length: Up to 2 years

Under the terms of the G.30 provision – Extensive Leave of Absence. Must be requested at least two months before it is to take effect.

Compassionate Care Leave – School District “tops up” salary once EI claim is approved

Article G.2

Length: Up to 8 weeks with “top-up” and an additional 18 weeks of EI only, unpaid by the school district

To be granted in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.

Bereavement Leave - Paid

Article G.4

Length: Up to 5 days with a possible two additional days for travel outside of the local community

To be granted in the case of death of the employee’s immediate family (up to 5 days), aunts or uncles or like in-laws (up to 3 days) and an other relative or friend (1 day)

Court Appearances – Paid

Article G.24

Length: Depends on circumstances

To be granted to a teacher serving as a juror or witness in court (fully paid) or for a teacher appearing as a plaintiff or defendant in court (at the daily cost of a TTOC)

Civic or Public Duty - Unpaid

Article G.28

Length: Dependent on circumstances

To be granted for candidates and elected officials for municipal, regional district, provincial and federal duties. Please see Collective Agreement for full details.

TTOCs Conducting Union Business – Paid – Union reimburses employer

Article G.7

Length: Dependent on circumstances

To be granted to a TTOC authorized by the CTA or BCTF to conduct union business during the work week.

Education Leave – Paid or Unpaid

Length: Dependent on circumstances

Extensive Leave of Absence based on G.29

Length: Up to two years

Granted to teachers for compassionate, personal or professional purposes. Must be requested two months before the leave is to commence. When retuning, teacher must submit written confirmation of return no later than April 1st of that year.

Deferred Salary Leave

Article G.31

A one-year leave granted to teachers participating in the Deferred Salary Plan who have deferred part of their salary for 2-4 years.
